"De Haremakerij" by Klaas Harenmaker & Comp.

For centuries there was a workshop, a line railway and a residential building at Hoogstraat 39-41, owned by, among others, the company Klaas Harenmaker and Comp. In addition to this building, the company also had a "hair yard" or "stinkerij" at the end of the Zaagselpad. Nothing remains of this warehouse.

Here the cow tails and horse tails needed to make "the hair" were stored and processed for hair production. The family also traded in hair, including with the V.O.C. shipyard in Amsterdam, where they used the hair to fill the seams in ship walls and decks. From 1742 onwards, more horse tails were bought than cow tails.

    The Haremaker family (information: GAZ).

The company of Klaas Haremaker and Comp. was a family business. Members of the Haremaker family put in capital and shared the profits annually. They also worked in the company in return for payment of wages.

When a contract was concluded in 1799 between the companions Cornelis Claasz. Haremaker, Jan Claasz. Haremaker and Cornelis Jansz. Haremaker, the reason given was that this was done in order to "prevent the prescriptive affair in this family as much as possible". The 1799 contract also stipulated that the sons of the family could be trained in the manufacture of hair from the age of 14. When their father died or retired as a partner in the company, they could succeed him. However, they had to be 25 years old. They could also be younger if they were married. One of the partners in the company acted as an accountant...

In this house from 1743, the "haren" were made, elongated mats made of braided horsehair that were used to press the ground seeds and peanuts in the oil mills.

The building is a donation from the cocoa factory "De Zaan".

The house dates from 1743, the workshop in the lowest part is older.
