At first glance, this is a piece of forest path at high altitude, which recedes behind the magnificent views from the Alexandrinenhütte to the Thuringian Forest and the Coburg and Heldburger Land. A treat at second glance. And not for nothing nature reserve. From here I saw around 30 birds of prey circling over the surrounding fields. With the Red Kites alone, I stopped counting at 20. What a sight! Before you leave the grove again, you can see a variety of trees that cannot be found in commercial forests with their monocultures. Pines, beeches, a few spruces, junipers ..... A sparse forest. Anyone who walks through with open eyes will feel: "There is something different here."

The approximately 21 hectare Sennigshöhe nature reserve was placed under protection in 1993. It is located about 800 meters north of Mirsdorf in the Meeder municipality of the Coburg district.

The nature reserve consists of semi-dry grassland, sparse pine forest and heat-loving edges in front. A large number of juniper bushes (Juniperus communis) indicate that the area developed from a sheep pasture. A large number of rare and endangered plant species can be found on the semi-dry grassland and in the sparse pine forest. For example, golden and silver thistles, large-flowered brunelle and orchid species such as the mosquito orchid, the wood hyacinth and the wood anemone grow here. The autumn aspect is formed by the plant species German gentian and fringed gentian. The grass species that form the stand are the feathered twig, the upright brome and the pyramidal iris. Endangered bird species that use the vegetation complex as a breeding and feeding habitat include: hobby, whitethroat, red-backed shrike, red kite, turtle dove and honey buzzard.

In order to maintain the structure of the dry grassland, the area is looked after by a traveling shepherd and his flock. The shepherd grazes through the area two to three times a year. In the light pine forest, attempts are made to prevent bush growth in order to ensure the appropriate growth conditions for the semi-dry grassland species.
