Prince-Bishop Franz Ludwig Schenk von Castell had a representative summer residence built in Eichstätt. Gabriel de Gabrieli was responsible as the builder. The three garden pavilions also come from him.

From 1735 onwards, the Hofgarten was built, which extends in the form of a large rectangle to the southwest towards the Altmühl. The garden, designed in the Baroque style, was characterized by small tree avenues and meticulously trimmed, partly ornamental, low hedges. After secularization, the entire area remained in the possession of the last prince-bishop for a few years until it passed to the Dukes of Leuchtenberg in 1817. The new masters had part of the court garden converted into an English garden, in keeping with the custom of the time.

In 1977, the conversion of the former summer residence into the administrative headquarters of the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt was completed. The part of the garden immediately adjacent to the university building was redesigned as a baroque complex. This creates an attractive contrast to the adjacent English Garden.
