This abandoned quarry, the Quarry of Waterval, is the type locality of the Zand van Waterval, a sand layer that was deposited millions of years ago. This layer of sand still protrudes into this quarry, and can be seen at the top of the slope (further down the layer of sand is covered by erosional material).

Geological monument Tyvelocatre Sand of Waterval

During part of the Tertiary (approx. 35 to 30 million years ago), the entire South Limburg was flooded by the Middle Oligocene sea. In this sea, three sand and clay pebbles were deposited that together are considered to be part of the Rupel Formation.
The middle package is named after this old abandoned quarry.
This quarry is the TYPE LOCATION for the Sand of Waterwal in the Netherlands.

The Zane van Waterval Type Locality is an officially recognized geological monument located in a natural setting near Waterval. This location is of scientific and educational importance because it reveals unique geological features that provide insight into the history of the landscape and soil formation in this region.

At the location, rock layers, fossils, and unusual soil structures can be seen that are characteristic of the region and attract researchers, students, and geology enthusiasts. The area demonstrates how natural processes such as erosion, sedimentation, and drainage have shaped the landscape over thousands of years. Designated a "type locality," this point serves as a reference for studies and comparisons with other geological formations.
