The foundation stone for the Waldkirche in Göhren was laid in 1929 on the so-called "Speckbusch". From here, the visitor enjoys a magnificent view over the Mönchgut. The altar of the church comes from Ortisei in South Tyrol. The two figures under the cross represent Mary and John and are dressed in the Mönchguter costume. The woman holds the hymnal in her hand and the man holds the fishing net over his arm according to the old monastic rule: "ora et labora" (pray and work!) Both belong together. Striking and extremely remarkable are the four colored stained glass windows in the sanctuary. When the sun is shining, they shine in all colors. From the ceiling hangs a votive ship, it is a barque with the name "sea eagle".

Something different with a ship on the ceiling

The Protestant church in Göhren is the newest church building on the Mönchgut peninsula.

It was only consecrated in May 1930. This is particularly remarkable because the church appears considerably older due to its medieval architectural style. It stands on a hill where a Slavic settlement existed as early as the 12th century.

From here, there is a beautiful view of meadows, fields, and the lagoon landscape. Benches invite you to linger.

Externally, the church is particularly impressive due to its massive double-towered façade. Due to its elevated location, the towers can be seen from across Mönchgut. Inside, the church is a simple hall building with stained glass panes in the sanctuary.

The four stained-glass windows are decorated with nautical motifs. Particularly noteworthy are the altar figures created by the Tyrolean sculptor Ferdinand Stufflesser: Mary and John as a fishing couple in Mönchgut costume.

Also unusual is the votive ship, which is almost two decades older than the church itself. Paul Strübing, a local from Göhren, built the barque "Seeadler" in 1913 and donated it to the church after its completion.

The church is open daily from May to the end of October.
