Herzogenhügel is one of the oldest mountain ranges in Europe. There you can find stained slate and hornfels-like quartzite rocks interspersed with pyrite. As it weathers, it gives the rock a bright red-brown color to almost black. This place is of interest for geological reasons, in a quarry you can find the only rock of volcanic origin in the east of Belgium.
