The Volkspark in Enschede was laid out in 1872 and is therefore considered the oldest of its kind. It was donated by the textile entrepreneur Hendrik Jan van Heek (1814-1872) to offer the population a chance to relax. At the edge of the park on Parkweg there is a memorial column to the founder.
