The Val Gardena church of St. Martin, like the town itself, was first mentioned in writing in 1378. Initially without a tower and with a simple nave, the Val Gardena church building was converted into the new Protestant era in 1539. The first major structural change took place in 1582. In that year, the church's first tower was built, which was initially only slightly larger than the nave. The Val Gardena church finally received its current external appearance in 1799, when the old tower was demolished and rebuilt in its current form.
