Road Cycling Highlight
The village fountain in Herxheim (Landau) is located on a square opposite the town hall and in front of the Villa Wieser in the upper main street.
In the center of the fountain I am surrounded by a round water trough, made of bronze cast tobacco shrubs. Several "Tabakhases" are placed on the wall around the trough. Tobacco plays a major role in the municipality of Hayna, which belongs to Herxheim. The fountain, which is laid out in an axis between the town hall and Villa Wieser, is surrounded by four figures, all of which are related to Herxheim or the immediate region. On the street side there is a representation of a sand cart wagon. Since 1931 a sand track race takes place regularly in Herxheim.
Opposite, on the side facing the villa, a bread basket is installed, symbolizing the traditional "bread consecration". This custom exists in Herxheim and the communities north of it since the plague years 1666/67. From the water trough attached below this representation, a gutter leads water into the well center with the tobacco plants.
On the west side is the representation of a unicorn. This figure from French mythology is supposed to make a reference to Villa Wieser in the background, which was built in the style of a French country house.
Opposite the unicorn, on the eastern side of the fountain, is a trotter with a sulky. Trotting and gallop races have been held regularly in Herxheim since 1926

Designed by Prof. Gernot Rumpf and his wife Barbara, the village fountain with its bronze sculptures characterizes the center of Herxheim and, together with the Villa Wieser, has become a center of public life.
