Not so long ago, all villages in this region had one or more redoubts. Literally places where the population could entrench themselves and possibly defend themselves against malicious parties (robber benders, passing armies, you name it). Entrenchments had a fairly well-established structure, also in terms of duties and rights of the citizens. You often see street names with the word "schans", then you can be proud that there was once one somewhere in the area. Here, in the municipality of Ham, you have the Schans van Gerhees (Kolverdijk, 3945 Ham). It dates from the seventeenth century. The fort is a rectangle of earthen ramparts, built in the middle of a fen and surrounded by moats. This made it a shelter that was difficult to discover and reach, in which the local residents could 'hide' themselves. Now the redoubt looks like an ordinary wooded inland dune. But if you look closely, you will still discover the remains of the earthen ramparts and moats. The aim is to restore the 'Schans van Gerhees' back to its former glory.
