The Schans van Gerhees (Kolverdijk, 3945 Ham) dates from the seventeenth century. The fortress is a rectangle of earthen walls, built in the middle of a fen and surrounded by moats. This made it a difficult to discover and reach hideout, in which the inhabitants of the area could 'hide' themselves against marauding armies and bands of robbers.
Now the redoubt looks like an ordinary, wooded inland dune. But if you look closely, you can still discover the remains of the earthen walls and moats. The intention is to restore the 'Schans van Gerhees' back to its former glory. A number of viewing windows have already been placed on the site.
