The canal to Beverlo was built in a record time of three years. The excavation work began in 1854. It serves as a branch of the Bocholt-Herentals canal and was mainly built for military purposes. It was a supply canal for the garrison town of Leopoldsburg. Later it also became commercially important for the metal industry in Lommel. The canal flows into the port bay of Leopoldsburg and is navigable without locks.
