Kaltenstein Castle, formerly Vaihingen Castle, overlooks the town of Vaihingen an der Enz as its landmark.

Kaltenstein Castle in Vaihingen an der Enz (Ludwigsburg district) has an eventful history. The building, which can be seen from afar, sits enthroned on a 271 meter high shell limestone cliff, was first mentioned in 1096. In the early days of "Castrum Vehingen" there was a lot of coming and going of various noble families, in the 14th century the House of Württemberg took over the direction. Later the castle was used as a barracks and a hospital. In the two world wars there were prisoners of war and opponents of the regime. After the youth village of the Christian Youth Village Association moved out in 2014, Kaltenstein Castle was orphaned for years. And the search for a new lord of the castle turned out to be difficult. Now a Pforzheim entrepreneur would like to open a five-star hotel with gastronomy on Kaltenstein in the next two to three years.

The castle was taken over by the Christian Youth Village Association of Germany (CJD) in 1949 to serve as a youth, educational and social workshop for young people. At the end of 2013, the CJD terminated the lease on the rooms it rented in the castle.
In 2020, a concession agreement was signed between the state of Baden-Württemberg and the private Schloss-Collection GmbH & Co KG, which provides for use as a hotel and restaurant. Not much has happened to date, as there are apparently major problems with parking spaces and fire department access.
You can explore the castle (except the inner courtyard) by bike.
