At first it was owned by the Counts of Vaihingen. In 1339 it was acquired by the Counts of Württemberg and appointed a senior bailiff who resided at the castle. The castle served as a garrison and military hospital until the end of the 18th century, and from 1843 as a workhouse. In 1949 it was taken over by the Christian Youth Village Association in Germany.
