In the 16th century, the inner part of the castle was converted into a palace and presumably renamed at the same time. By the 18th century, Kaltenstein Castle had been redesigned twice and, above all, its fortifications had been supplemented with modern ramparts. Until the end of the 19th century, the building served various purposes: as a military troop base (garrison) and military hospital (military hospital), and from 1843 as a workhouse.

      And here is the source:

Kaltenstein Castle - formerly a castle with a ring wall that has been preserved to this day and a mighty humpback brickwork - was first mentioned in 1096 as castrum vehingen.

At first it was owned by the Counts of Vaihingen. In 1339 it was acquired by the Counts of Württemberg and appointed a senior bailiff who resided at the castle. In the 16th century and again in 1734 the castle was rebuilt and its fortifications reinforced. The castle served as a garrison and military hospital until the end of the 18th century, and from 1843 as a workhouse. In 1949 it was taken over by the Christian Youth Village Association in Germany.
