The area of today's Holtwicker Juniper Heath was originally created by agricultural forest areas. Almost every peasantry in Westphalia was in possession of such a mark. They had the right to use these brands as grazing areas for their livestock, for timber and for cutting pests. Over time, the forest increasingly disappeared due to overexploitation and a lack of reforestation. Only heather and juniper bushes grew on the depleted and acidified soil. Interesting information about the juniper heath

"The "Holtwicker Juniper Heath" has been designated as a nature reserve since 1936. This cultural-historical testimony with typical heath animal and plant species offers an insight into historical economic areas and their communities.
This unique and significant area is located southwest of the Haltern district of Holtwick and is on the edge of the extensive forests of the Hohe Mark Nature Park. A key factor is the old, connected and impressively grown juniper stand in close interlocking with small areas of dwarf shrub heath and oak-birch forest remnants. In between there are always smaller stands of broom and bell heather. The nature reserve lies at the foot of a dry valley, which, like many other dry valleys, had its origins in the Ice Age.
This explains how height differences of up to 20 meters arise in the nature reserve, which is only six hectares in size..."
