The area of today's Holtwicker Juniper Heath was originally created by agricultural forest areas. Almost every peasantry in Westphalia was in possession of such a mark. They had the right to use these brands as grazing areas for their livestock, for timber and for cutting pests. Over time, the forest increasingly disappeared due to overexploitation and a lack of reforestation. Only heather and juniper bushes grew on the depleted and acidified soil.
