In the 19th century, Lake Maggiore was discovered by English travellers, who built beautiful summer residences, including the famous Villa Taranto, with 16 hectares of garden, and the park of the Villa Giulia, on the lake. The botanical gardens surrounding the Villa Taranto, created after 1931 by the noble Scottish captain Nail MnEcharn, are the city's biggest tourist attraction. They are visited by about 150,000 visitors every year.
