According to legend, in 1970 the Cologne Zoo had the idea of sending some animals on a "recreational trip to the outskirts of the city". However, as the bison could only get bus tickets for the Cologne public transport system at the time, they drove as far away from the zoo as possible and got off at the "Wildpark" stop out of curiosity. As they liked Dünnwald so much, they simply stayed and have since been one of the main attractions in the Dünnwald wildlife enclosure alongside wild boars, fallow deer and mouflon.

"Bisent once roamed across large parts of mainland Europe. Shrinking habitats and hunting led to a decline in bison populations from the 11th century onwards. In 1919, the last lowland bison in Europe was shot, followed by the last mountain bison in the Caucasus in 1927. This meant that wild bison were extinct.

Nevertheless, Europe's last wild cattle are now returning to their original habitat. Thanks to international breeding and re-settlement projects and the strict protection status in many European countries, the bison population today again comprises more than 7,200 animals worldwide. The WWF is also committed to the return of the bison."
