In 1858, the Düsseldorf architect Max Joseph Custodis had the country house named after him built over the then-unexcavated ruins of the palace, which served as a summer residence for the artist and architect's family.

The Custodis House is now the prominent official residence of the Hattingen monument conservator.

The former Custodis country house stands within the castle ruins and is a popular destination for hikers and museum enthusiasts. The view over the green Ruhr Valley enchants some, while the eventful history of the castle complex dating back to the 12th/13th century captivates others. The ruins' many walls, cellars, staircases, and niches stimulate the imagination and inspire imaginations about what the castle might have looked like.
