The listed Saaltor spans Burgstrasse at the southern end of the historic old town and defines the access to the old town centre from the south. The only remaining gate of the three gates in the medieval town fortifications is, in its current form, a simple building from the second half of the 18th century. The upper floor is built in half-timbered style.

The last of the three surviving city gates of the medieval fortifications, which used to have large wooden gate wings and a small built-in wicket gate.
