In 1624, four Friars Minor from the Ghent mother monastery settled in the donated “Gruuthof” in Kortrijkstraat. With the expansion of the monastic community, the original building was exchanged for the more spacious Poekhof across the street. Generous donations enabled the construction of a new monastery; the new building was completed in 1644. From 1686, the Friars Minor started with humanities education in Tielt, originally in the Ieperstraat, from 1688 in a house on the Kortrijkstraat. A new college building was built on the same site in 1720, the current St.-Jozefs College, which was taken over by the diocese in 1848.

The church in its current form was built in 1707 with an attached portal from 1727. Initially, the fathers had limited themselves to building a chapel, which was destroyed by fire in 1660, together with the monastery. The reconstruction of the monastery was soon started, but it was not until the end of the 17th century that they received permission to build the church. Now all that remains is the austere, baroque church (1707) and the monastery from the second half of the 17th century, which have since been adapted. Places of interest in the baroque interior are the communion rail made by the Debosschere brothers from Tielt, who also artfully elaborated the balustrade of the rood screen.

The beautiful linden drive to the monastery was planted in 1776.
