Tips

  • In 1678, art-loving citizens of Hamburg pushed through the establishment of a public opera house in the Senate, the first privately run opera house in Germany. The Hamburg citizens' initiative expresses the need to see the changed living and economic reality of the city articulated in its cultural institutions. The Hamburg Opera Theater developed into one of the leading musical centers in Europe. From 1721 Georg Philip Telemann was director of the music of the city of Hamburg and composed numerous operas. Georg Friedrich Handel was employed at the house as a violinist and harpsichordist. In 1705 his first opera "Almira" was premiered here.

But when the existence of the opera was threatened by financial mismanagement and a lack of public interest, the Pietists felt vindicated and the house was closed as an independent company in 1738.

A new start in 1765: the "Ackermann'sche Comödiantenhaus" was opened with a mixed program of plays and operas. From 1767 the theater was called the "Deutsches Nationaltheater" due to Gotthold Ephraim Lessing's influence.

In 1827 the old wooden building on Gänsemarkt became obsolete. The new "Stadt-Theater" on Dammtorstraße with a capacity of 2,800 seats opened on May 3, 1827 with Goethe's "Egmont" and Beethoven's incidental music.

In 1934 it was renamed "Hamburgische Staatsoper" and in 1943 the auditorium was completely destroyed, but the stage remained largely intact. From 1946 onwards it was used as a provisional auditorium when games resumed, which was soon extended into the ruins. The house is opened with a performance of Mozart's "Magic Flute" on October 15, 1955.

Since 2015, Kent Nagano has been General Music Director of the Hamburg State Opera and the Hamburg Philharmonic State Orchestra. The opera and orchestra director is the Swiss Georges Delnon. In the decade from 2005 to 2015, the Australian conductor Simone Young was artistic director and general music director of the house.

Today, the Hamburg State Opera is one of the most renowned opera houses in the world. The trade journal Opernwelt named it “Opera House of the Year” in 1997 and 2005.

  • The Hamburg State Opera in Hamburg's Neustadt goes back to an opera house founded in 1678 on Gänsemarkt. The opera house has been on Dammtorstrasse since 1827. The front building was destroyed by air raids in 1943 and rebuilt in 1955 in the style of post-war modernism. (Source: Wiki)
