    Öxará means “axe river” in Icelandic. The source of the river is near the Botnssúlur volcano. The river flows through the Þingvellir National Park and forms the impressive Öxarárfoss waterfall. After the waterfall, the Öxará flows further through the Allmannagjá gorge and eventually flows into the Þingvallavatn. The Öxará plays an important role in the landscape and history of the park.
