This cave got its name because of numerous finds of bones of cave bears. Excavations were carried out here as early as 1861. In addition to bear bones, Oskar Fraas also found bones from mammoths, wild horses, elks and other animals, as well as the remains of stone tools that were (at a later date) proven to be from the Stone Age.
Today the cave is barred for further exploration and bat protection.
In the Hohlenstein, just to the left of the Bärenhöhle, is also the Stadel (or Hohlenstein-Stadel). These two prehistorically significant caves are connected by a smaller rock niche, the Kleine Scheuer (source: cojote-outdoor.de/schwaebische-alb-2/hoehlen-schwaebische-alb/baerenhoehle-lonetal/).
