A real special feature is the occurrence of the brook lamprey in the upper reaches of the Rodau.

The brook lamprey is a vertebrate, but not a fish. It belongs to the superclass of the cyclostomes, or gillless, a primordial group of vertebrates which includes the hagfish (or ginger) and the lamprey.

Lampreys are living fossils that have changed little for 500 million years. They have a sucking mouth and an eel-like, elongated body with a fin-like dorsal and tail hem.

Lampreys only have 2 eyes, the name derives from the 7 point-shaped gill openings and the nostrils, which are arranged in a line from the real eye and appear optically like 9 eyes.

While around 25 lamprey species occur in coastal waters and are predominantly parasitic on fish, around 20 species are stationary, non-parasitic freshwater residents. The brook lamprey is one of these.

The 10-20 cm long brook lamprey spends most of its life (3-5 years) in the larval stage as a so-called Querder. The Querder live largely hidden in the stream sediment, preferably where plant remains and suspended particles accumulate. Only the mouth protrudes a little into the flowing water in order to be able to filter suspended particles out of the water. The larva has neither a suction mouth nor eyes.

The conversion to the adult brook lamprey can take up to a year. As adult animals, brook lampreys no longer take in food, the intestines recede and the animals die after reproduction.

Although the brook lamprey is not considered endangered in Hesse, it is one of the specially protected species according to BNatSchG § 7, paragraph 2.

The brook lamprey only occurs in the Rodau between Zilligarten in Urberach and the Ober-Roden sewage treatment plant. It is the only occurrence in southern Hesse between Main and Darmstadt. Only in the front Odenwald there is another occurrence.
