From 1797 until his death in 1816, Duke Frederick II—from 1806 as the first King of Württemberg—residened in Ludwigsburg every summer. During this time, he completely redesigned the area east of the palace. In the middle of the wilderness, surrounded by steep cliffs, stood the opera house built under Duke Carl Eugen, which was connected to the palace by the so-called Brückenweg (Bridge Path), a wooden walkway spanning the gorge. Frederick had the opera house demolished, the area filled in, and the bridge replaced by a causeway.

In 1801, he created the oval Schüsselesee (Bowl Lake) on the site of the opera house. It got its name from a bowl or basin in the center of the lake, from which water flowed.
