Gräfenau Water Tower (1894/95) in Hemshof - Ludwigshafen 🚴‍♂️

The water tower stands in the courtyard of the Gräfenau School, also a listed building, in the heart of Ludwigshafen's narrow, old town center, in Hemshof. It appears unpredictable and enormous, even in comparison to the stately old school, which it almost overwhelms. The tower has a circular floor plan and is constructed in three parts: the base is made of sandstone blocks, above which are yellow bricks in the tapered shaft, which ends with a ring of round windows.
Above this, the large, plastered tower head projects out, painted in ochre with striking decorations in orange and white. The conical roof, almost invisible from close up, is green and crowned by a weather vane. The tower is 45 meters tall. 🚴‍♂️
The water tank holds 1,000 cubic meters. The pipes, dating from 1896, are hand-riveted and have remained watertight for over 100 years. This technical cultural monument is still functional but out of service. It has been out of service as a water tower since April 2008, serving as a site for mobile phone antennas.
The water tower was built in 1894/95 according to plans by the Mannheim engineer Oskar Smreker and the Munich master builder Anton König.
The suspended floor tank was constructed by the Berlin-based company Bamag.
Inside, the suspended ceiling was removed in 1977, and a steel structure was installed. The original wooden spiral staircase was replaced with a metal staircase with a freight elevator. During restorations in 1981/82, the plastered cork panels of the tower head cladding were replaced with painted aluminum sheets in the original colors.
