The storm surge of 1953 also had consequences for Geertruidenberg and Raamdonksveer, many houses were in the water. That is why the dikes along the Donge were also raised as part of the Delta Works. This work was completed in 1994 and as a memento the last eighteen sandbags were cast in concrete and left as a work of art at the place where the delta height was last reached.

Cycling

In 1993-1994 the dikes were raised and widened. Before that time, that area was very sensitive to high water. Hans van Eersel, a Hoogheemraadschap employee, came up with the idea of placing the 'last sandbags' that have become superfluous next to the dike. The artwork consists of 18 burlap sandbags filled with concrete.
