In 1917, the German occupiers built more than two hundred bunkers in the Wase landscape. Since then they have formed a meandering connection between the municipality of Steendorp and the municipality of Vrasene.
These bunkers were part of the Hollandstellung, a larger line of defense that ran from the Zwin to Vrasene.
After all, the Germans expect an attack by the Allies on Antwerp from the north. the strategic location of Fort Liefkenshoek on the Scheldt did not go unnoticed by the German army command. On the dike - in fortification language 'de courtine' - between the bastions Kieldrecht and Doel, three reinforced concrete bunkers were fitted: an observation post between two firing bunkers, armed with a cannon.
Part of the bunker line has been protected as a monument since 2002.
