    Tips

Take a seat on this couch and go back in time.
Terrible things have happened at this location.

Historical facts: On June 21, 1638, during the Eighty Years' War, a decisive battle took place in this area on the Melkader between the Spanish and the States armies. This resulted in a major defeat for the States' armies. In great disarray, chased by the Spanish armies (+ 10,000 men), the States' armies retreated to the slightly more distant fort of Liefkenshoek.

At least 3000 Dutch soldiers were killed at this historic location and hundreds were driven into the Melkkader and drowned. Many soldiers were also made prisoners of war. Only about 1500 men reached the fort and they were quickly recalled to Bergen op Zoom.
The losses were high on both sides and Maurits Frederik van Nassau-Siegen, the 17-year-old and only son of Willem van Nassau-Siegen was killed here in Kallo.
The southern Spanish army captured 3 standards, 50 banners, 26 artillery pieces and 48 vessels.
The defeat of the States army at Kallo meant for the population of Antwerp that they remained under the authority of the Spaniards.
With the Battle of Kallo, another attempt to join Antwerp to the Republic failed.
