After acquiring the Hessian territory in 1264, Landgrave Heinrich I of Hesse (1244–1308) had the lion in his shield for the first time on his large equestrian seal from 1269 as the “Hessian lion”. This is considered the first evidence of the Hessian lion as a coat of arms on a seal.

It took a while until I was able to realize that the border fence was not the state border of the GDR, but that there was also an "upstream state territory". This Hessian lion marks the actual border. Thank God only those between Hesse and Thuringia.
