In 1860 the acquisition of land for a shooting range and practice area began. First, 249 acres on the side of the Jüterbog-Treuenbrietzen road were acquired by the military treasury. Over the next few years, the site was constantly enlarged through the purchase of further land from the villages of Bardnitz, Klausdorf, Niedergörsdorf, Pechüle and Zinna, as well as the town of Jüterbog. In 1934 Jüterbog was the largest military training area in Germany. In 1936 the military training area was expanded again. The villages of Zinna, Mehlsdorf and Felsentreu had to be completely abandoned by their inhabitants. After the expansion, the military training area covered more than 11,000 hectares. The infrastructure was also expanded. In 1937 the forest camp (Forst Zinna) received its own train station and a larger provision store. It also kept growing. In 1939 a small railway was started to be built over the military training area, but this was not realized because of the war. After the Second World War, the Red Army released Mehlsdorf for demolition, which from then on was used as a site for building materials in the town of Felsentreu, 2 km away.
