Climate change is affecting our wilderness areas. The severe drought in summer enormously increases the risk of large forest fires on the former military training areas, which were contaminated with ordnance. In the years 2017 to 2019 in particular, several large forest fires broke out in the Jüterbog wilderness area.

In order to increase safety, the Brandenburg Natural Landscape Foundation set up forest fire protection systems in coordination with the responsible authorities, emergency services, experts and other local partners. They serve to secure the emergency services in the event of a fire, to protect surrounding areas from the spread of fire and to keep the ammunition-loaded wilderness areas free from intervention. You too can contribute to the safety of wilderness areas by not smoking when visiting and avoiding the area if there is a risk of fire. According to the Brandenburg State Forest Act, smoking in the Brandenburg Forest or within a distance of less than 50 meters from the edge of the forest is prohibited all year round:
