The Old Hospital was founded by the Knights of St. John before 1230 and became the property of the Order of the Holy Spirit before 1250. The building complex of the Citizens' Hospital, consisting of a stone building from the early 13th century and two large half-timbered extensions from the 15th century, now houses the Imperial City Museum.

The three-part building complex of the Holy Spirit Hospital (Citizens' Hospital) has existed in its oldest part since 1246 and is therefore of Hohenstaufen origin. The other two buildings were built in 1421/22 and 1543. Since the interior of the complex is still in a medieval state, the buildings are of great value for the city's history. The hospital was originally located outside the city walls.

Today the Imperial City Museum is housed here.
