Around 1220/30 the Rieseby Church was built as a brick building next to a Bronze Age barrow.

Its external design, which was largely restored during the renovation in 1913, is based on Ratzeburg Cathedral.

It is considered one of the most beautiful country churches in Schleswig-Holstein.

Bishops of Schleswig, who at the time had a fortified castle on Gut Stubbe, had the church built in the 13th century. At first it was intended as a flat-roofed, Romanesque complex. After a change in the construction plan, it was vaulted at the end of the 13th century in the style of the late Romanesque transition period.
