The Ziegenmarkt is located in Schwerin's second-oldest district, Schelfstadt,
the Neustadt (New Town), which was an independent town until 1832. While in the Middle Ages there was still a swampy lowland on this site, connected to the Beutel (bay of Lake Schwerin) and the Pfaffenteich (Pfaffensee), the drainage and development of the so-called Schelfe (Shelfe) progressed steadily in the 16th and 17th centuries.

Today, apart from the name, only the "Goat," a bronze animal sculpture by
Stefan Thomas from 1981, reminds us of the square's former use. Haggling is only still taking place in the retail, service, and catering establishments surrounding the Ziegenmarkt. Of these, the Freischütz (Marksman) is hardly the most significant. This traditional pub has existed since 1903 – although the premises have since been used as a SED company kindergarten and a technical college cafeteria. Where the name "Freischütz" comes from is no longer clear.

There are two bronze sculptures on the Ziegenmarkt. One of a fish, because there used to be a fish market here, as a city map from 1747 shows, and one of a goat, because this place has been called Ziegenmarkt since 1843.
The goat has had its home here in the Schelfstadt since 1982. It moved here from Martin-Luther-King-Str. The goat was created by the artist Stefan Thomas.

Originally, the goat wasn't even on the goat market. It was actually given land on the Dreesch to graze on. The goat was actually supposed to be a cow. And the goat market was actually called the fish market. At least that's what it is shown as in the 1747 city map. The name goat market has been in use since 1843.
