The dam in Driel is called "the crane of the Netherlands". This divides the water that flows across the Rhine into the land between Nederrijn and Lek and the IJssel.

The hoisting installations have been placed upstairs in the cottages. These engine rooms are only accessible via the spiral staircase in the open air. The huge steel arches are raised at high water in the Lower Rhine so that the water can easily pass through. They are normally closed to keep the water level in the river suitable for shipping. a few kilometers downstream, near Amerongen, there is such a weir. Electricity is also generated there with the flowing water.

Driel is a village in the municipality of Overbetuwe in Gelderland. It is located southwest of Arnhem on the southern bank of the Rhine.
In Roman times there was a Roman castellum at Driel. This was probably in the area that is now called the Baarskamp. At the time, Driel was on the limes; the border of the Roman Empire.
