The Santa Maria Cathedral of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Alghero-Bosa dates from the 16th century, but has been rebuilt several times. It only received its classicist facade in the 19th century. The Chiesa di San Michele (Church of St. Michael) served as a cathedral until it was built. It was rebuilt in the 17th century; the previous building of the old church came from the 14./16. Century. This church is still the seat of the Jesuit college today. It is shaped like a cross. The dome of the church dates from 1950 and is one of the most eye-catching focal points in the whole city: it is covered with glazed, colored roof tiles.
