In the past, tree-free heather areas dominated wide stretches of land on the heights of the Rothaargebirge. Afforestation with spruce trees has reduced this form of cultural landscape to a few remaining areas. In addition to the Kahler Asten near Winterberg and the New Hagen near Niedersfeld, the most important ones in the Waldecker Upland are Heiden on the Kahlen Pön, the Ettelsberg and the Osterkopf. The rounded hilltop of the Osterkopf can be seen when looking north behind the village of Usseln.
