Until 1870, some of the steep slopes of the Corniche were still equipped with stairs; only after the demolition were they leveled. A large part of the battlemented fortress walls also had to be removed, opening up a magnificent view of the Alzette valley, the lower town of Grund and the Plateau du Rham.

The Corniche refers to the famous path along the old city walls, above the Alzette Valley. It offers one of the best views of the lower town (Grund), the cliffs, and the casemates—hence the "Balcony of Europe."
