Locally, it is also known as Gëlle Fra ("Golden Lady"), a name that refers to the gilded female figure atop its towering obelisk. It was designed to honour the Luxembourgers who died in World War I. When the Nazis occupied the city during World War II, the base and obelisk of the monument were destroyed and the statue was removed. The statue you see today has been partially restored using original pieces and was completed in 1985.
