In 987, Archbishop Egbert of Trier consecrated a church next to the castle in honor of the Most Holy Redeemer. When the church was rebuilt in the 13th century, Saint Michael was named its patron saint. When the city was conquered by Burgundian troops in 1443, it suffered severe damage. A fire at the beginning of the 15th century led to a new building being built in 1519. This date is engraved in a vault keystone.

St. Michael's Church is the oldest surviving sacred building in the city. In 987, the castle chapel of the Counts of Luxembourg stood on the site of today's St. Michael's Church. Over the centuries, the church was destroyed several times, but was always rebuilt, changed and expanded. The church received its current appearance in 1688. Due to its eventful history, the building, which was restored in the 1960s and 1980s, now combines elements of Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque architecture.
