The origin of the Weschnitz spring is not clearly documented. What is certain is that the 60-kilometer-long river has several spring branches, one of which originates in Hammelbach and another in neighboring Weschnitz. The Weschnitz flows through the Weschnitz valley in the Odenwald with the towns of Fürth, Rimbach, Mörlenbach, Birkenau, where it leads through the Six-Mill Valley to Weinheim. From there it flows through the Rhine plain and finally flows into the Rhine at Biblis.

The Weschnitz is named after a Celtic river god. The Weschnitz Valley is one of the main valleys and access routes to the Odenwald.

The Weschnitz spring in Hammelbach is composed and designed as a grill. You will also find a treading pool here, which is fed with the spring water.
