According to legend, Hagen von Tronje killed the Nibelung hero Siegfried at this well after a joint hunting trip. The unsuspecting Siegfried leaned down to the spring to quench his thirst. Hagen thrust the spear through his shoulder, his only vulnerable body.

What happened before: Siegfried defeated the dragon and bathed in its blood, which made him invulnerable. Since a linden leaf had been placed on his shoulder and therefore no blood could "work" there, this exact spot was vulnerable. But how did Hagen know that? Quite simply, he had previously asked Siegfried's wife Kriemhild to mark this vulnerable spot with a cross stitch in Siegfried's robe so that he, the good friend, could better protect Siegfried's life.
