The mighty sculpture was created over ten years ago by the Val Gardena artist Josef Bernardi from Swiss pine. With an impressive body height of 3.3 meters and a total height of over seven meters, the cross is a reflection of its surroundings. The Odle, Sciliar, Sassopiatto, and Sassolungo mountains have their charm in both summer and winter.

In 1755 the wealthy Jakob Christoph von Ingram from Lajen had the chapel built today. On November 24, 1789, Josef Sebastian Aichner, custodian of the Gufidaun court, reported that the chapel, which had been closed as a result of the Josephine reforms, had been reopened by the population. In 1846 the chapel underwent a major restoration thanks to a contribution from Marianna Moroder-Purger, who came from a wealthy merchant family in Ortisei.
In 1885, the chapel, which had been severely damaged by the high alpine weather, was restored by the German and Austrian Alpine Association. In 1956 the chapel was completely renovated and a fence was added to protect it from grazing cattle.
