The field gate is the only passage through the immunity wall in the southeastern corner of the abbey park grounds.
An immunity wall demarcates a self-contained area that has its own jurisdiction. This was particularly the case with monasteries, indicating that the order was autonomous.
All goods entered the monastery through the gate, and later, the inmates left the workhouse through it for daily forced labor.
The field gate was built between 1756 and 1778, whereas the originally much higher immunity wall was already erected in the 16th century (ibid.).
