An early mention of the place dates back to the 12th century as sancti Leodegarii, a parish dedicated to Saint Leodegarius. Saint-Léger, like Estaimpuis and the other surrounding villages, once belonged to the Dutch-speaking region; it was then called Sint-Legiers. Over the years, these villages have become Frenchified.
Saint-Léger was an independent municipality until it was incorporated into the municipality of Estaimpuis during the municipal reorganization of 1977.

The inscription on the memorial reads: "Saint-Léger to its heroes and martyrs."
