The Sint-Pietersbrug on the old arm of the Bossuit-Kortrijk canal is one of the most beautiful spots in Zwevegem. The bridge dates from 1892 and is a protected monument. It is a rare example of an iron lifting bridge with an open truss construction that was once operated manually.

Want to get a glimpse of what the Bossuit-Kortrijk Canal looked like in the 19th century? Then be sure to check out the protected Sint-Pietersbrugje, which spans an old branch of the Bossuit-Kortrijk Canal.

Such bridges are relatively rare these days: There aren't many examples of 19th-century iron lift bridges left. This one is already over a hundred years old: When the canal was widened in the 1980s, this small bridge was placed on this old canal branch.

It's operated manually, which is much easier than it sounds: The bridge operator turns a wheel to raise it, but thanks to the counterweights and gearing, they don't have to exert much force.

The Bossuit-Kortrijk Canal connects the Scheldt and the Lys and dates back to 1861. It took 1200 workers three years to excavate the 15.4-kilometer-long channel, all by hand, of course.
