After the Dillenburg Palace was destroyed in 1760 during the Seven Years' War, the former residents urgently needed new accommodation. Starting in 1769, stones from the old fortifications (for the ground floor and façade) were used to build the baroque houses on today's Wilhelmstrasse for the Orange-Nassau government officials and their families. The royal stables, which were previously housed in the old castle, were also rebuilt in this street in 1771. Together with the riding house (1789/90), it forms the core of today's stud farm. The Hessian State Stud, which was re-established in 1869, goes back to Prince Moritz von Orange, who was born in Dillenburg and was baptized in the town church. The entire complex on both sides of Wilhelmstraße covers 10 hectares.

After the Seven Years' War, the stud farm was housed in the buildings on Wilhelmstrasse in Dillenburg in 1772. The buildings were built from the ruins of Dillenburg Castle, which was destroyed in 1760. They served to house the court stud farm of the Princes of Orange-Nassau and as residential buildings for officials. The plans for the development of Wilhelmstrasse came from the Dillenburg building inspector Johann Friedrich Sckell.

The stud farm's total area covers around ten hectares. The three late Baroque main buildings (Prince's House, Marstall, Riding House) are cultural monuments and form a representative street front. This was extended by another stable in 1816. Opposite the main buildings is the parade ground, which serves as a riding and driving area.

The riding house is reminiscent of a small version of the riding hall of the Vienna Riding School.
