The Stockhaus, which can be seen in the oldest town view from 1575, is the only remaining building from the old Dillenburg fortifications that still stands on the Schlossberg. For centuries it was a prison in which the "stick", a hollowed out large block of wood, stood in which the inmates' feet were locked. It is very likely that Jan Rubens, the father of the famous painter Peter Paul Rubens, was also imprisoned in this block. He had fathered a child with Anna of Saxony, the second wife of Prince William of Orange.
