Through traffic was probably already moving through the “Untertor” before the town charter was granted (1344).
Through the “Obertor” in the north and the “Untertor” in the south of Dillenburg, through traffic to the trade fair cities of Frankfurt (in the south) and Cologne (in the west) probably moved through before the town charter was granted (1344).

The first major renovations took place in 1594.

In 1737, Princess Isabella, the wife of the last Prince of Dillenburg, Christian, had today's building complex created by structurally connecting the two houses right next to the gate. The princess, who had fallen out with her husband, lived in this “city palace” until her death. That's why this building was also called "Princess' house", and later, when several state authorities found accommodation in it, "College building".

In the 18th century, the area around the Untertor was the residential area for members of the upper bourgeoisie.

After a comprehensive renovation, the building has been home to condominiums and the city library since 2009.

The Dillenburg public library is located in the historic rooms of the city palace.

The building is one of many stops on the Historical Trail. However, the house cannot be visited from the inside.
